Penn Badgley Reflects on Fatherhood and Stepfatherhood

Penn Badgley, known for his roles on television and film, has been navigating the roles of father and stepfather in recent years. Married to Domino Kirke since 2017, Badgley is raising his biological son alongside Kirke’s teenage son, Cassius.

In a recent appearance on The New York Times’ Modern Love podcast, Badgley opened up about the differences between being a father and a stepfather. He acknowledged that while he plays a parental role in both children’s lives, the dynamics vary significantly.

Badgley emphasized that he respects Cassius’s relationship with his biological father and does not attempt to replace that role. Instead, he sees himself as “something else” in Cassius’s life, understanding the importance of maintaining boundaries and supporting the existing parental structure.

Reflecting on his relationship with his own young son, who was born in August 2020, Badgley expressed a commitment to nurturing vulnerability and fostering a strong bond as his son grows older.

As for his stepson, Badgley noted the challenges of connecting with a teenager who may have different interests and priorities. However, he found common ground by sharing experiences like watching movies together, strengthening their relationship in the process.

Despite his busy schedule filming the final season of the popular Netflix series You, Badgley remains dedicated to balancing his career with his roles as a father and stepfather. With the impending conclusion of the show, he looks forward to spending more quality time with his family at home.
